Overall Winner & Animal Action Winner – Andy Richardson

Bison in snow, Yellowstone National Park by Peter Whitehead
This remarkable image caught our judges' attention immediately. Most images of Japanese macaques are in the hot pools of in the valley of the valley of the Yokoyu River. So to see this individual leaping the river, covered in snow and ice, and with its baby on its back is exceptional.

Here is what Andy had to say about the moment:
'Hokkaido in Winter offers some amazing wildlife experiences and seeing the Japanese Macaques aka Snow Monkeys is one of them. A snowstorm and falling temperatures made taking photos quite awkward around the hot pool in which they congregate due to the dense rising steam. The Macaques do, however, also huddle together in the natural warm puddles formed by the stream in the snow below the pool, often in family groups. The stream was narrow enough at one point to be jumped safely, so I waited just downstream and got lucky when this mother and baby appeared.  It was then cross frozen fingers for both the photo and the flying baby. Hold on tight!' - Andy Richardson

Wildlife Portraits Winner –
Ashley Pead

Undoubtedly, the Wildlife Portraits category is usually the most hard-fought and picking a winner is no easy feat for our judges. The short-eared owl is a species found across much of the Northern Hemisphere and is relatively common, but to capture such a powerful and intimate portrait immediately caught our judges' eyes.

Ashley has captured a familiar species and really brought it to life. The soft light illuminating the owl and the piercing yellow of the eyes made this particular image stand out from the competition.

Congratulations Ashley!

Wildlife Portfolio Winner – Helen Pinchin

Our panel of judges had a hard time picking the Wildlife Portfolio winner. Capturing a range of images which encompasses a destination or species' identity is a real challenge. The judges eventually settled on Helen's wonderful collection of images from Kenya's Masai Mara. The portfolio perfectly captures a number of species in this magnificent landscape.

Helen describes her portfolio:
“This portfolio contains a selection of images featuring mammals, chosen from the many images of various wildlife species that I took on an amazing photography trip to the Masai Mara in Kenya.

The daily drives, in a jeep where everyone had a window seat, led to many superb - and close - wildlife photo opportunities, so rarely would I have needed more than my 80-400mm lens plus full-frame camera.

What were the highlights? Being so close to elephants that I had to use a wide-angle lens, being mock-charged by a baby elephant, having lion cubs settle in the shade of our jeep … or watching the tree-climbing lions, two male giraffe fighting, two male elephants in battle … or?!

On all occasions we spent plenty of time with our subjects, giving us the chance to practice our photography skills and gather a large portfolio of images. Wonderful!” - Helen Pinchin
